After I drew Jim, the girls were still happy, so I decided to keep going and draw the trees outside our living room window. As I was finishing, Lucy came in with markers and pens and asked whether she could draw with me, and I thought “why on earth not? It’s waterproof ink and in my sketchbook, which is all about process.”
She gave me detailed instructions on not covering up the things she had drawn. “But you can draw over there, Mommy,” she said, pointing to the right-hand page, which she hadn’t yet gotten to.
After Lucy finished, Naomi wanted to try, so I let her. She sat on my lap, leaning forward over the sketchbook to put as much body weight behind the colored pencil as possible. It was our best Sunday afternoon in a long time.
